Vujnovich led the "Halyard Mission" which was the largest rescue ever of Americans behind enemy lines. In a ceremony in 2010 to honor his courageous actions, Vujnovich stated that it was Draza Mihailovich, a local militia leader fighting against the Nazis which made the raid possible.
It took 66 days to get the Americans out of the area as they could only travel at night so as to avoid being recaptured by the Germans in the area. The story of the "Halyard Mission" is chronicled in the 2007 book entitled "The Forgotten 500."
This is just another example why it may be appropriate to label the people of that era as the "Greatest Generation."
