Navi Pillay, the United Nations’ top human rights official, told a meeting of the Human Rights Council that acts of “unspeakable” violence are occurring daily in Syria, and that al-Assad should be referred to the International Criminal Court.
Dozens of people are being killed daily as protesters continue to attempt to stand up to the president’s government. Al-Assad has ruled Syria since 2000, and before that his father had ruled for the previous 29 years. The protesters are demanding the president’s resignation, and he is responding violently… so violent that in the past 11 months al-Assad’s forces are responsible for the deaths of over 7,500 Syrian citizens.
