Sports can bring about the very best in people... it can build confidence, begin the healing process after tragedy, and teach valuable life lessons... however, as we are constantly being reminded, sometimes athletes and fans can take a sports rivalry a little too far.
Last night the 64-team NCAA Basketball tournament began and some fans of the University of Southern Mississippi took their support for their team to an ugly place. Late in the first half, Kansas State point guard Angel Rodriguez went to the line after being fouled. As he stepped to the line, the freshman was showered with a chant from the USM band... "Where's your green card?"
Southern Mississippi president Martha Saunders quickly apologized for the incident stating, "We deeply regret the remarks made by a few students at today's game. The word of these individuals do not represent the sentiments of our pep band, athletic department or university."
Sometimes, "I'm sorry" doesn't really cut it... especially when the person apologizing is not even the one involved... in any event, Rodriguez and his teammates had the last laugh as they eliminated Southern Mississippi from the tournament.
