The Governor, who is a Democrat, quickly lost support of both local and national democratic leaders as the party almost unanimously called for his resignation. Virginia has a difficult and painful history regarding race as it was the first state/colony to import slaves over 400 years ago, but has worked to confront that past in an effort to create a more inclusive and accepting society.
Northam, thus far, is refusing to resign and if he does not there is no legal way to remove him as he has not broken any law. If he does resign, the Lt. Governor, Justin Farfax, who is African American, would we sworn in. Democrats and Republicans were urging Northam to leave office and allow for this transition, that is until today when sexual assault allegations were made against Fairfax in relation to a 2004 incident.
Should Northam resign based on this photograph from 1984? Thoughts?
