For teens in the United States, it sometimes seem that parents, teachers, and well basically all authority figures, try to keep them on a pretty tight leash. Kids sometimes feel restricted and unable to have any measure of freedom. While these feelings are normal they are also relative...
It is being reported that this past week in India a sixteen year old girl was beaten and brutally murdered for disobeying her father when she attended her boyfriend's birthday party.
In many rural areas of India, the centuries old customs of the Caste System are still very much alive - even though technically it has been outlawed for over a century. The killing, along with dozens of other each year, is known as an "honor killing." it is believed that when a person dishonors the family, that person needs to be killed in order to restore the family's honor. Normally this plays out when a female is disobedient to her father or husband. In this case, the young girl went against the direction of her father, boarded a bus, and traveled to her boyfriend's village. Caste rules forbid women to travel alone, even though her boyfriend was of the same Caste.
Once she returned home, she was removed from the household, and the next day her body was found on the side of the road with her head and are removed. In India, there is not much outrage as these types of things have been somewhat common throughout India's history. There are many people trying to change this type of culture, but it can sometimes be difficult to battle thousands of years of tradition.
