When I was a high school student I often heard teachers and other adults accuse me and my peers of being apathetic towards the issues of the world. Now that I'm the teacher/adult I find myself asking that very question... are students apathetic? Or.... are they just bored? There is a very great difference between these two conditions. Apathy is the condition of not caring, while boredom is a condition one can be roused from.
Apathy is more a much more dangerous, potentially permanent condition, but people who are bored are simply looking for something to spark their interest... they are looking for something to care about. So do students care about their own education?
That is a complicated question. In order for a person to be truly invested in something and care deeply for something, they must feel like they are part of something, that what they think and feel matters... that their voices are heard. As students, do you feel like your voices are heard? Are they heard by your teachers? By your administrators? By the School Committee?
How can you become more invested in your own educational process? I ask you not for complaints about the system, but for solutions to the things you perceive as being the problems.
How can your voice become heard?
