This past week a minor child became Belgium's first child to be euthanized in Belgium since the age restriction were lifted two years ago. The child suffered from an undisclosed, incurable disease and had asked for the right to choose death over continued treatment. The age and identity of the child remains unknown, but the case has received international coverage as in many countries even adults cannot legally use physician assisted suicide. Belgian authorities say that this right, given to adults in 2002, should be extended to all persons regardless of age. Many around the world disagree and think that such action is immoral and against all recognized systems of faith.
In the United States there is great disagreement regarding this issue and as of today there are only four states in which physician assisted suicide is legal (Washington, Oregon, California, and Vermont) and in these states the patient must be over 18.
