What now "occupy-ers"?

10/27/2011

This past week has seen some major changes in the "occupy" movement. What had been a peaceful, almost party like atmosphere, turned into a violent clash with police in Oakland. On Tuesday mass arrests were made as the protesters refused to disperse. Members of the Occupy Movement quoted their First Amendment rights of free speech and freedom of assembly as the reasons why they did not have to end the protests.

The arrests led to tension which resulted in tear gas fired into the large crowds as well as rubber bullets
being fired into the crowd of protesters.

In Providence, Mayor Tavaras said the city is planning to take legal action and force the protesters out if they do not leave voluntarily. There are limits to the First Amendment, and according to Tavaras, the protesters have reached those limits.

I am personally not suprised at the suddne outbreak. There really is no such thing as peaceful protest, the law ws bound to make the protesters leave. And what are they even protesting about? Right now it seems like it's First Amendment Rights...

It's stupid how the police don't follow any thing. Like they can walk around and do whatever when I'm sure if it happened to one of their friends or themselves they wouldn't be too happy. Also it seems like the first amendment isn't in place anymore

I feel as if the Police became impatient with the protesters and to unnessary measures and handling the protestors. I saw some video on it and it seems brutal. People just saying their rights were being knocked out and hurt for no reason.

If the protestors were just sitting there then the police have no right to kick them out or arrest anyone. If it was a peaceful protest then why did the police come in and gas people and shoot them. I hope no one in Providence gets shot(by the police).

I think if people listen to these protestors maybe things won't have to be so violent. Personally, I don't see the big deal with them staying because eventually they'll go home and this will blow over hopefully.

I'm not saying what the protesters did was right... but i am saying that what the police did was wrong. They crossed the line. If i remember correctly, there was a guy named Martin Luther King Jr. who said that violence was never the answer.. and we, as a nation, accept that and support it (generally). Therefore, why are the police shooting people with rubber bullets and smoking it up with tear gas, just because they were protesting? They had no right to do that. Its really not that big of a deal. I mean, if you know that you arent going to give them what they want, then just ignore it. And eventually they will get tired that no one is listening to them, then they will stop. It takes two to tango. In closing, our government enjoys shooting citizens, and smoking them out with tear gas... Just Kidding:).. REALLY, in closing, our governemt is so impatient that they would rather shoot citizens with rubber bullets and smoke them out with tear gas, then wait for a little bit longer. That sounds like impatience to me.

and plus, the government just doesnt like when people dont agree with them and now they are taking away our rights... our government is corrupt and it needs to change.

Ooooouuuhhh, i went to occupy providence for one reason and one reason only. TO BE ON TV!!!!!!! it was fun to yell about things that i dont even know about or what was going on. Oh well though

They police handled the situation. However they could have handled it with less force. Tear gas and rubber bullets is a bit much for protesters. Couldn't they broke up the protest in a much less forceful way.

If the protesters werent doing anything harmful they should be allowed to sit there all they want, why not? The police made the people more angry then they were in the first place so it was a bad idea on the polices part. Although they are doing their job so its not really their fault either. Hopefully nothing like that will happen in Providence and everyone can just come to an agreement.

If the police took action in the beginning, these problems would not be happening. The government should have been responsible enough to have put the law down in at the start so that they would understand why they are being told to leave at night.

I feel as though what the police did in Oakland was crossing the line. The protesters should not have had tear gas or rubber pellets fired at them. The protesters didn't seem to be doing anything wrong. If it's public property and they're not being a nuisance then they should be allowed to stay there for as long as they want. The protesters are just trying to make a change. They're not there for violence by any means.

The protesters shouldnt have been stepping on the police's toes. and they should know their boundaries .

There is no reason for the police to shoot rubber bullets/tear gas at the protesters. If the police felt like they were pushing the limit and told them to leave, then fine but there is no need for violence.

It's not surprising that things already turned violent for these protests. The people that are out there don't even really know WHY they are there and it's not shocking that the government is getting annoyed. Things will probably get violent here in Rhode Island too if people don't listen to the government in the first place.

I'm glad people who aren't involved in "Occupy" are taking action in taking down the people who are involved. It's time that they leave. When this first news went out that people were "occupying" places, I knew something bad was going to come out of it and nothing good. I agree with Mayor Tavaras that the people have reached the limits. They weren't making any progress anyway.

I think that the government is forceing the issue and the people will only get madder at what the government is doing. to put it in short terms this will not end well!

The people do have their right's to freedom of speech and assembly but when they break those by refusing to follow the law and go against it then they should be prepared for what is going to come of it/
