Mladic, who is now 70 years old, appeared in the International Criminal Court at The Hague, Netherlands, wearing a dark suit and tie; he was waiving and smiling to the crowds as he was ushered in. This trial is the culmination of a long wait for survivors and family members of victims of the events which occurred between 1992-1995. The crime with which Mladic is being charged is just one incident, and though it claimed over 8,000 lives, the war of the former Yugoslavia claimed upwards of 100,000 people.
Mladic is accused of organizing the week-long massacre in Srebrencia, which at the time was a U.N. "Safe Haven", but also leading the 43 month siege of Sarajevo in which 10,000 people were killed by snipers, machine guns, and heavy artillery.
The prosecution has two days in which to lay out its case.
