Although the harassers often think they are funny, the victims of their unwanted jokes or advances often feel sick to their stomachs and are afraid to return to school. The study also shows that most of the incidents went unreported; students taking part in the survey said that the harassment became part of the normal school day, and they also felt that nothing would really be done if the incidents were reported to school authorities.
Of the 1,002 girls and 963 boys who took part in the study, 40% of boys say they have been victims of sexual harassment and 56% of girls reported the same... only about 9% say they reported the harassment.
Researchers state that kids need to understand their rights concerning the 1972 Title IX law... it's not just about sports... if kids start to really understand their rights, they will be more likely to stand up for themselves in any number of situations.
