The group claims that once the Ten Commandments statue was approved, the door was opened for any and all religious icons to be put on display. The Ten Commandments monument was paid for by private funds and placed on public grounds... the New York based Satanic Temple claims it simply wants the same treatment. They claim their design will allow people to, "sit on the lap of Satan for inspiration and contemplation."
The American Civil Liberties Union has sued to have the Ten Commandments statue removed claiming that because it is on public land, it violates separation of Church and State. Other groups including a Hindu organization, an animal rights group, and the satirical Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster have also asked for the statue to be removed.
The case is currently in the court system and the governing panel has decided to not take any requests until the adjudication process has been completed. Should the courts rule in favor of keeping the monument, it creates an interesting debate to say the least for the Satanic statue.
