Hicks turned himself into police and now the family members and the Chapel Hill community are seeking answers as to why Hicks executed three innocent people. Hicks' wife claims that the motive was an ongoing dispute over parking, while many feel this was racially or religiously motivated. All three victims are Muslim Americans and Hicks is a very out spoken Atheists. Many feel the killings are a result of Hicks' deep seeded distrust of not only Muslims, but all faith systems.
The families of the victims are in a state of shock and outrage claiming that their children would have been safer in the war zones of the Middle East than in the United States under the current tensions related to Islamic extremism. People in the Islamic Community as well as prominent Atheists are all condemning these acts of barbarity.
The freedom of religion is at the very core of American society and it is one of our fundamental freedoms. This includes the freedom to choose not to have a religion. People of all faiths (and of no faith) must come together for the betterment of humanity focusing on what can unify us, rather than what rips us apart.
