Look around your first period class and you will most likely see heavy eyes and half awake faces. At 7:24 in the morning teenagers are normally a little less than 100% as they struggle to wake up and push on through the day... (this task made even more difficult since you can no longer have their cherished Dunkin Donuts in the morning...)
In an effort to combat the sleepy teenager problem, some high schools in Canada are experimenting with later start times... but that means they get out of class much later as well. Claiming that students don't have enough time to sleep, school officials are attempting a plan in which first period starts at 10:00am. The hope is that students will be better rested, more aware, and will retain more of the information. This change is not as dramatic as it may seem to us however... the schools normal opening time was already 9:00am. Critics of the plan state that it will not help the masses of groggy students claiming that they will simply go to bed even later... thus the problem remains the same... the solution... go to bed!

I think that making school start later is a great idea, but I think that 10 o'clock is too late because if school starts at 10 then by the time you're out of school the day would already almost be over. So i think that if school were to start later taht it should be around 8:30 because its not to late and its not to early 9/7/2012 06:56:39 am
To me this seems like the school department in this Cancadian trying to micro manage the situation. The are probably bigger problems that they can address. There's nothing they can do about what time students go to sleep and how many hours of sleep they get. Ten o'clock is way too late and they should just not mess with the system and keep it the same. Maybe they can try to fix problems that are actually within their power limits.

Why doesn't Canada start school at a normal hour like 8 or 9 in the morning. And if the kids are so groggy at 7 why don't you give them Dunkin Donuts (or as they say in Canada, Tim Hortons).

I do not agree with the idea of school starting later. In elementary school I didn't even enjoy getting out of school close to three. If school starts later and students are involved in sports then by the time practice is over, there probably won't be enough time to do the school work. So if students complain about not getting enough sleep then it's their fault because they know what time school starts every morning and they should be ready for it.

i think that school should not start later. i think this because if school started later then kids would not be more focused on their homework afterward. Also in highschool they have alot of after school practices and alot of kids are involved in that. Therefore i dont think that school should start later because we will also get out later.

I agree that school should start later. School should start around the time elementary starts. Some of my friends and myself were actually wide awake by that time. Even though that may not be true for some others

I think that it would be a better idea to start school at a later time. It would give kids the chance to get a better nights sleep, and also our grades would probably be better because we would be wide awake for all of our classes, so we would pay more attention.

How lazy are we going to let this generation of kids be? We already get a ton of breaks. If you make school start at 10 o'clock, how are you going to wake up at 6 o'clock when you get an actual job. Early school hours is not just because the school district hates us, it's because we need to be prepared for real life situations. You're not alert in school? You're too tired to get up for 7:20? Good luck in a job where if you're not alert at 6:30 when you get there you get fired!

There you go Hunter that makes alot of sense. At first I was agreeing with school starting later but then I read your comment and now I agree with you. If school started at 10:00 your first day at work would be your last day.

I disagree with the statement that going to school later won't benefit students. Most high school students go to bed after midnight including myself so I don't think we'll be staying up much later than that regardless what time school starts. I also don't think that making the start time of school later is a good idea because than we will get released from school later. I do believe that there are ways we can start school later and still be released at the same time we always have. There are many hours of school where we spend time doing basically nothing and there are changes we can make in the school schedule to make life much easier for students and teachers.

I dont think that starting school later would fix the problem. Kids would think they could stay up later then normal. If they started school later then the sports schedule would be all messed up, and kids would be at practice later. Then they would be up later doing there homework.

Starting school later sounds like a good idea, but it might not really help anything. People might sleep later, meaning they're still all groggy duing first period. And it would keep students with extra curricular activities up even later doing their homework.

I believe that starting school later is a good idea. At 7:24 in the morning no body wants to be up. That is including the teachers. However starting the day at 10:00 would be too late considering we would not get out till around 5. That would not work with school athletics.

I think starting school at ten o clock is way too late. most kids have to stay after school anyways whether it is to make up assignments or go to sports or clubs, so by the time you would get home it would be about 6 and you would just be starting homework.

Seeing as high school is supposed to prepare us for real life, the time of school starting should really be left as it is. Students should simply act responsibly and be able to manage their time enough for adequate sleep, school systems should not have to do that. No college or job is going to postpone class because the students/employees are tired.

I don't like this idea. I think it would be a better idea to make the first period more exciting and energizing not a whole class of taking notes or listening to lectures which might bore the kids to sleep. Make it something where the students have to get involved and do something in the class.

I believe that school is supposed to not only give us an education, but also prepare us for a healthy lifestyle in the real world. Pushing school off a few hours for kids to sleep in would not be beneficial in achieving that. Although balancing homework, after school activities, and enough sleep is hard for many students, doing so will enable them to keep a job, a social life, and anything else their life outside of high school with throw at them.

I think that our time for school is just fine. As much as i hate waking up for school in the morning, i would rather go in early and get out at 1:50pm then going in laiter and getting out at 3:00pm. In my opinion as much as they want to help, they cannot change the sleep habits of kids. They're going to get up early and be 100% with an hour more of sleep. I am deffiently not 100% in the morning, even with sleep!

Starting school at 10 am would be crazy, we wouldnt get out of school untill about 4:30. Then we still need to do homework, go to our extracuricular activities and or sports practices and get ready for bed. I know that if this was the case for me I probly wouldnt be getting into bed till about 1 am. When we finish high school and college not many of us are going to be able to choose the time we wake up and go into work and for many working adults their day begins very early. Statistics show that 70% wake up between 5 and 8 am and of that, 30% stated that they wake up before 6am. making it so that schools start at 10 will allow students to sleep till 9 or even 9:30. In no way is that preparing us for the real world ahead of us.

I think that the later they start school, then the later teens will go to bed. changing the time won't help me stay awake, no matter how much sleep I get the night before. If they start school later, then when we finally graduate and have to go to work, it will be a rude awakening.

I think that starting school later in the day would be a bad idea. Starting school later would push the school day back too far into the day. Sports teams would have a major issue practicing after school as well, teams would not get done with practice until almost 10 at night.Students would also go to bed later since they do not have to wake up as early, they would be getting the same amount of sleep as before

I think that starting school later is an extremely bad decision. it does not matter what time school starts, kids will always complain about getting up. if they start school at a later time, that just means that the students will get out later. Students will complain that they day is dragging on and they will just barely be home for dinner. Homework will get done late, and some may not be able to sleep. All in all, its not a good idea.

I think it is a great idea to start school later but it has its disadvantages. One is that students will be more likely to go to bed later seeing how they will have less time in the evening to do homework and still maintain an average teenage life. It is also has its advantages of students being more alert in class and not drag throughout the day feeling tired and not retaining the information learn in classes.

I think schools should start school later but 10:00 am is a little too late for school. Schools should start around 8 or 9 and since we'll be getting up early to work in the future, we need to be trained and get used to getting up early. Students probably also doesn't want to get out of school too late.

I think that this is a smart idea in some ways. For one, I know that if it was Pilgrim that went to school later in the morning, i would most likely still go to bed at the same time as i do every other night, because, well, I like sleep. Also, if students have things to do at night and dont have time to complete it that night after school, they would have time to finish their school work in the morning.

I do not think starting this school an hour later would greatly improve how tired students are during first period. An hour later means out an hour later which results in later sports practices. Everything is pushed back in time, meaning the result of starting the school earlier wouldn't make a dramatic difference to many students. untimely it is the students responsibility to not procrastinate and get to bed earlier.

It would probably be a little better to have the school start a little later in the day at 8 or 8:30 tops. It wouldn't be good to go too late. 10 is too late. They should allow people to drink Dunkin Donuts if they want to.

Letting school start later is a good idea but kids will start to be like "yeah ill stay up an hour later" then it will be like before and they will still be tired. I think the way to solve the problem is by not only allowing Dunkin Donuts but opening one right in the school. Then people wont have to go out and get coffee before school. They can just go to the cafeteria.

Canadians i tell 'ya. I think a later time for a shool to start is honestly a good and bad idea. it is good so students can wake up well rested, and they can give 100% of effort at school on test and quizes, and the later time give students more time at night to study. This is also a bad idea because you are allowing students to become lazy and wake up basically on there own time.

I think that is not a spoon. Because when the schools start later then the kids will go later to bed. It is the task from parents to see that her child go to bed in right time. And when the children go older they must know himself how much time they need to sleep.

really? shame on us (our generation). They are lazy, in my opinion. If they wen't to school 10:00, they'd get out around 5:00. That means, all after school programs and after school sports could last until 8:00 or even 9:00. Then they have to go home, eat, do homework and whatever they need to do to be prepared for the next day. Then get to bed by like 11:00. that honestly means you would have no life, besides school and sleeping. Bad choice in my opinion.

I think schools should leave the times as it is. There are a few problems I see with this. 1) teens will just go to bed later because they don't have to go to school early in the morning. 2) After school sports will go on until 9 o'clock at nigh and than teen will be up all night doing homework and they will still be sleepy durning the day. Bad idea Canada.

I think that this idea is great but to a point. I think that 10 am is too late but 7 am is too early. I like school to start at 9 because it would give kids to sleep in more and be more refresh to do things in school. I know that some kids are up all night not doing homework and go to bed late but others go to bed late because of the amount of homework is given. Its not fair to have kids up all night doing homework and then getting up early to go back to school. If we had school start later, some kids would be able to sleep in from a long night of working. Plus, some kids can do homework in the morning if they had too. Just because of after school sports, no city wanted to change their hours. I understand Canada for trying something out like this that has never been done before. Good job Canada for caring about those kids who are up all hours and getting up early!

I think that 10 AM is way to late to have school start. 8:30 AM is a more suitable time for school to start because it still gives kids enough time to get the right amount of sleep. Most kids have to stay up late doing homework so making school at 8:30 would help them get the amount of sleep they need so that they can wake up and go to school the next day. It is a big step for Canada to take towards a better school system that will most likely result in higher test scores because of the extra sleep they are giving to the students.

i feel that starting school later is ridicoulous. Yes teenagers are lazy! But by making school time start later gives teenagers the advantage to stay up even later! I think if their going to make a solution to the problem they should let us eat in the morning! i mean teachers complain we're not awake, give us energy and we'll be ready to learm.
