The entire legal proceeding lasted a little over two days and opponents of the verdict argue that there is no way the state could have possibly proven that each of the 529 men played an active role in the killing of a single person, especially given the fact that only 129 of the defendants were even in the courtroom during the trial. Each of the 529 defendants, after being found guilty, were sentenced to death. Whether or not these sentences are carried out remains to be seen, however the mere fact that such a sentence could be handed down is, at best, disturbing.
The Egyptian Court could perhaps outdo itself very quickly as this week 600 men will go on trial in a single mass proceeding... they could all face the death penalty as well.
