A higher percentage of American students are enrolling in college than at any point in our nation's history. Now the bad...
Barley half of those students will graduate. For those attending community college the numbers are even worse as only about 33% of students will graduate or move on to four year schools.
Studies coming from the the City University of New York Community College illustrate that students who attend top universities such as Harvard, Yale, Princeton, and the like have more than a 90% chance of graduating as compared with students entering college outside that elite group. The reason? These schools offer more programs for struggling students than do other colleges and universities. Why do they do this? Because they can afford to.
A poll of college professors and recruiting officers offer another reason why college freshmen struggle so much in their first year... they are simply unprepared; unprepared to be on their own, unprepared to be held accountable for the first time in their lives, unprepared to not get two, three, or four chances, unprepared in terms of academics... unprepared for life outside the coddled existence that is high school.
The numbers seem to at least partially support these harsh criticisms as about 30% of college freshmen will not return to school for their sophomore year...
