Yesterday, around 40,000 people, including many tourists, took part in the hour-long "street-bombardment" which included the throwing of about 120 tons of tomatoes! Five truck loads of tomatoes and portable showers were provided by the town, and following the massive food fight, officials hosed down the walls of the ancient city.
Each year, tens of thousands of people take place in what is believed to be the world's largest food fight. The Tomatio Festival has been officially taking place in Bunol, Spain since 1950, but the first known incident occurred in 1945 when disgruntled residents wanted to take part in the Parade of Gigantes y Cabezudos but were denied. According to the story, there was a tomato stand close by and the angry residents of the town raided a nearby fruit and vegetable stand... the rest is history.

It look kind of fun but it's so dirty at the same time. 4,000+ is a lot of people and i hope that no one got hurt from this food fight. Just from the picture, it is fun to watch but i'm having doubts if i actually want to participate in this madness.

How fun! This seems like an all around good day to me. It may be a little less than hygienic, but I'm sure it proves to be a memorable experience that offers quite a few interesting tales down the line. It is also symbolic in a way of the people's perseverance and unwillingness to accept limitations all those years ago . Honestly, to me this seems like an extremely unique and entertaining way to memorialize the message sent by the first "food fighters". It is also a colossal waste of perfectly good tomatoes, but, who really cares about that when you're having that much fun ;)

Why doesn't Rhode Island do fun and crazy things like this! As much as I would love to go out of the country, I wish I did not have to just to do something crazy like a 40,000 person food fight! I'm sure would could think of something crazy in history that we could reenact and make a memorable experience from it! But even if a memorable moment in history isn't able to be found, why can't we just make up a day and create a moment in history! I dare everyone to do so!

i think that this is very fun and messy! If you had to pay money for tomatoes and showers that would be a waste because it is just for the fun of it and it makes a huge mess. In a poor state like rhode island we would never be able to do something as fun as this!
