Partly in response to that criticism the NFL has put in place a new policy, effective immediately. If a player commits a domestic violence or sexual assault crime that player will be suspended without pay for six weeks. A second incident will result in a lifetime ban from the NFL. While many people are celebrating this new policy some fear that it may actually have an unintended consequence.
People have expressed concern that if a wife/girlfriend knows that her husband/boyfriend would be suspended for life, that person may not report the assault for fear of having the primary breadwinner out of a lucrative job. Victims may feel that the long term consequences of the loss of millions of dollars is not worth reporting an assault.
This policy is NOT retroactive... meaning Rice's suspension will not be changed.
