Presidential Address Concerning ISIL...

12/6/2015

On Sunday night President Obama addressed the nation concerning the growing threat of the so-called Islamic State in particular and of militant, Islamic extremism in general.  He spoke of our need to better fight extremism online, abroad, and in our community.  He discussed how the United States is working with France, Germany, the United Kingdom, Turkey, and even Russia to fight the dangers posed by ISIL.  There were many takeaways from the speech including a focus on gun control, the potential usage of American troops in Syria and Iraq, and calling on congress to take action authorizing more resources for the continued fight against ISIL.  These are enormous issues, so big that it may seem that there is little the average citizen can do to help, but this isn't the case.  Another part of the speech focused on keeping true to our American values and our traditions.

The President asked that Americans remember that there is a very real difference between Islamic terrorists and the vast majority of Muslims.  That being said he also pointed out that there is a growing, radicalized ideal within Islam that the Muslim community, both in the United States and around the world, must come to terms with and battle against.  He argued that we must not give in to fear and react to this danger by changing our values.  Giving people religious tests, making them register, or putting their places of worship under surveillance are counter to American values and America law, and he summarized this point by saying we are all equal in the eyes of God and in the eyes of the law.

What are your thoughts concerning the President's remarks.  You can watch his speech below.

While I do believe a great deal of our nation needs to learn the difference between a Muslim and a terrorist I think we need to focus on a solution to the overall problem of terrorism that is really starting to have a major effect on our nation. Almost every week I hear of a new shooting that occurred because of ISIL. It seems our immediate reaction is to point our fingers in the direction of the cause of the shooting and then focus on saying that the act of terror was caused by extremists and not an average Muslim. I want to turn on the news when these things happen and hear what steps are being taken to find the source of the act what we are doing to prevent them from causing another attack. I feel as though restating that it was caused by an extremist group and then having politicians go on and on about what we need to do about Muslims in our country is extremely counterproductive.

I think the President needed to address the nation after the shooting and he explained the importance of keeping the country together and progress on from this shooting. He also made good points on gun control and the use of troops in the middle east. Obama explained and told the U.S about most of the ongoing problems in America and the world.

I dont know much about this subject but i do believe that they should put more thought into what they do about all the shooting problems we've had of recent but it seems like we dont put enough thought into these things we just think its another shooting these happen all the time but what i believe is that people should actually put some thought into it just because you were involved in any way shape or form its still a major issue and these people are trouble they are ruining our country i cant believe some people just put these things aside just because they think its not there problem it is your problem because this is your country, my country, are country just because your not involved or your friends are't involved dosnt mean its not your problem its everyones problem and the president needs to addressee it better then he does now

I do believe that this was a good thing that Obama did in addressing the issue of terrorism. A lot of people classify all Muslims into one group as terrorists, which is absurd to me. Until us as a society learn the major difference between the two, this issue will linger on and it could spiral into an issue that starts to cause even more problems.

i think that the presidents speech wasn't powerful enough. he didn't really get to the point of what exactly we are going to do to battle Isis. the speech didn't give people hope that there is going to be a drastic change in the fight against terrorism in the world.

I'm just glad someone is finally making the difference between American Muslims and ISIS terrorists clear to the public. These kinds of topics really needed to be addressed because most of the racism and hate is coming from people who are uneducated. Now that there is more awareness maybe we can actually start working towards a solution to these attacks.

I think that he was right in saying that monitoring places of worship such as mosques would be wrong because people do not monitor churches. They only want to monitor all Islam followers out of fear but the people who say they are Islam and commit acts of terrorism are not Islam, but extremists who should not force us to change our American values of freedom. I agree that we need change but this is not the way to do it. We should educate people that not all Muslim people are terrorists and not all terrorists are Muslim. We should educate people because if we do not, people will agree to monitoring mosques and places of Muslim worship. I also agree we need harder gun control to avoid guns in the wrong hands.
